Dear sponsors of SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci,
Although summer ended months ago, the unusually sunny weather we are having brings back memories of our seaside vacation and a deep impression it made on our children. Once again we went to Rogoznica near Šibenik. Children say this was the best vacation yet. During the ten days we spent there, the weather was flawless, the sea warm and inviting, and the food delicious. Our children made many new friends. Some even fell in love. All of them are looking forward to reuniting with their new friends next summer.
I often think of work that adults do in terms of an 8-hour work day or 40-hour work week. It is worth mentioning, however, that children spend an average of seven hours a day in school, and at least two additional hours on writing homework and studying. What happens when we overburden those who cannot cope with such pressure? It is precisely with this thought in mind that we try and provide extracurricular activities for our children that closely correspond to their wishes and interests. Dance nights on weekends fill our basement to capacity, and showcase many different dancing styles. Our art workshop produces beautiful necklaces and bracelets, and our monthly magazine “Ladilist” features the talents and thoughts of our children.
On Halloween, our children carved pumpkins that decorated the main street of our SOS Village. On International Child Day, we organized a bike riding course and the participants who successfully completed the course received bike riding licenses. Saturday is possibly the most popular day of the week, and not just because there is no school. Every Saturday, children from fifth through eighth grades travel to the town of Valpovo to take part in various workshops dealing with computers, photography, model making and astronomy. The 2-hour workshops usually begin at 10 a.m. and last until noon. Saturday evenings are mostly reserved for movie screenings or dancing. It so much easier to start a new week with batteries fully recharged!
Dear sponsors of SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci, as New Year is drawing nearer I would like to thank you for being there for us. Your help in caring for our children and making their childhood happy is invaluable. On behalf of the children in our care and co-workers who want to make our SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci a good place to live, I wish you health, happiness and joy during the holiday season and in 2010 as well.
Director of SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci
