Volunteering with SOS Children

santa ana girl

“Volunteering matters because volunteers have the power to change lives. They build social cohesion, enhance civic participation, mitigate conflict and contribute to a society’s well-being.” (UN Volunteers, 2011)

Volunteerism is acknowledged as a powerful force for change; a little of your time can make a big difference. Through volunteering in the UK your actions help raise awareness and funds for our projects around the world.

Volunteering gives you an opportunity to put your expertise and experience to the test, learn new skills, meet some great people and have your work make a difference.

Join our volunteering team through the following roles:

Regional Speakers

We are recruiting for our network of volunteer speakers. Read more about the role and how to get started as a regional speaker.

School Speakers

As part of our schools programme we offer visits to schools to teach students about childrens' lives around the world. If you have experience of teaching or working with children why not become an SOS Children School Speaker and inspire the next generation to make a difference?

Office Volunteers

Our UK office is located in central Cambridge. If you live locally and would like to give your time and skills to make a difference to our team please email lottie@soschildren.org to request an application form.

Spread the word

Small actions can have a lasting impact. Have a look at the ways you can raise awareness of our work.

What do we expect from our volunteers?

By volunteering for us you will be joining a team of busy professionals who are committed to working hard for SOS Children. Volunteers are a huge asset to the team and are greatly appreciated; all we ask for in exchange is your enthusiasm, commitment and reliability.

How much time will volunteering positions require of me?

The time commitment required varies according to the role you are undertaking. Regional volunteers' schedules are flexible as volunteers can arrange their own diary of events. Between the volunteer and SOS Children, a target number of talks and events will be set.

Volunteers in the office are generally required to be available for half a day a week or on a regular basis. We require a commitment of at least 3 months to the role.

Why don't you take on overseas volunteers?

In general SOS Children does not send volunteers abroad to work in the Children's Villages. Instead, we prefer to use local staff to make use of local knowledge and resources. There are a few reasons for this; firstly, it is of benefit for the children we care for that they are looked after by people who can offer a long-term commitment, which volunteers can rarely offer. This ensures continuity in the lives of the children we care for, and also means that they are surrounded by people who speak their own language and are familiar with their culture.

Secondly, by employing local staff, we also make a contribution to the local economy. Some exceptions are made at the discretion of SOS Children locally in cases where people can offer specialist skills: you will need to contact the national office directly concerning this.
