Throughout the year, CUSOS runs many fundraising events and initiatives in support of SOS Children. Here is just a flavour of what CUSOS gets up to over the academic year.
SOScape is an annual fundraising challenge of epic proportions. Participants are abandoned in an unknown location somewhere in the UK and tasked with navigating their way back to Cambridge without any money or outside help. And to make just a little bit more interesting, they have to travel via a famous landmark.
In 2013, the intrepid travellers were dropped at Frinton-on-Sea in Essex. So far, so easy, with Cambridge a mere 77 miles away by road. But with Stonehenge their waypoint, suddenly the journey became a lot more troublesome.
In the end, everybody got home and SOScape raised a whopping £2,044 for vulnerable children and families worldwide.
Created by SOS Children, Our Africa is an award-winning website which shows what life in Africa is really like - but from the children's perspective. Originally designed for schools, it has something to offer everyone who wants to learn a little more about Africa's diversity of culture, society and tradition.
Since the site's launch, CUSOS has been instrumental in promoting this pioneering site throughout Cambridge University. Over the course of 2013, CUSOS has joined with the Cambridge Hub to bring Our Africa to life for students all over Cambridge.
CUSOS is always keen to welcome new members. If you'd like to join, email firstname.lastname@example.org now.
CUSOS always has a presence at the CUSU Freshers' Fair as well as the Hub Ethical Fair. Both are held in Michaelmas term, so if you're in Cambridge, why not come along?
SOS Children's UK office is located on Hills Road, just a short walk from the city centre.
There are many opportunities for CUSOS members to get involved in and gain practical experience of life in an international charity. CUSOS members often embark on internships with SOS Children, and joining CUSOS is a great way to learn more about life in the charity sector.
