Young Jamaican Aids/HIV sufferers treated as part of Child Month

21/05/2008

A group of Jamaica n children with HIV/Aids received toys and a play area last week as part of the island's Child Month.

The youngsters, from Martha's House of Safety for Children, were given their treat by the National Child Month Committee (NCMC) on Friday (May 16th) in recognition of the 12th annual National Action Day celebrations.

Money provided by the RBTT bank helped to pay for the play area as well as a vegetable garden and a mural, while the toys were paid for by the Growing Minds Foundation, the Jamaica Observer reported.

The donation s were very much needed and gratefully received by Martha's Home, administrator Donna Reynolds told the Observer. She explained that having a place to play is very important for the children as it helps them to cope with their illness.

Pauline Mullings, chairperson for the NCMC, said that the glut of sponsorship had helped to make the activities at Martha's House on Friday so successful.

She told the newspaper: "I must say that today was very successful, It is the first time that we have managed to get so many activities done and it could not have been possible without the assistance of the RBTT bank.

"It is also a pleasure to see the increased amount of workers who turned out to help us with the activities and we also got a lot of support from the media."

Children's advocate Mary Clarke said that investing in the children of Jamaica was very important.

She said: "We need to allocate investment for our children. We need the private sector, ministries and agencies to see how we can allocate funds for our children and when we do, we need to make sure that we get the value for every dollar spent."
