South Africa deputy holds Xmas party for orphans

05/12/2007

A special Christmas party for South Africa's orphans is being held this week courtesy of the country's deputy president.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will host the event at her Cape Town home to help orphaned youngsters to experience some of the joys of the festive season.

As well as orphans, burns victims and disabled youngsters will also be invited to join in the fun.

The event, being held tomorrow (December 6th), will see ten children from each province in South Africa welcomed, as well as youngsters from all regions in the Western Cape.

It is the third time that such a celebration has been held, with 2005 seeing 300 children attend the Christmas party and 500 joining in last year's event.

This year, the day's activities will be co-hosted by the country's Office on the Rights of the Child.

Meanwhile, Christmas has also come early for children living with HIV and Aids at the Nigel Caring Community (NCC) centre.

Youngsters were presented with gifts by staff from the Gauteng Legislature on Saturday.

Toys, clothes, a stove and a refrigerator were donated to the centre which cares for around 60 one to six-year-olds.
