Morocco: “Enid Blyton – a global favourite!”
'Our Africa' behind the scenes: Kathie Neal reflects on her time spent on location in Morocco for ‘Our Africa’. Here, she tells us how she happened upon two school girls reading Enid Blyton in both Arabic and French.
"In a small town called Ait Ourir at the foot of the Atlas mountains, we were visiting one of the family homes in the Children’s Villages just after school time. It was quite nostalgic – it reminded me of my childhood when we would come home from school, play a bit with friends, and then gather round the kitchen table with our mother to do our homework. Sometimes my friends would stay and we would work together, sharing problems and giggles.
It was much the same here and rather interesting to see the children doing their homework in different languages - in Morocco, people speak Arabic, and French, and/or English. What really captured my heart was seeing two little girls reading the very English Enid Blyton to each other – one was reading in French and the other in Arabic!"
'Our Africa'
‘Our Africa’ is an ambitious project which sets out to let children across Africa film their lives the way they see them. Our teams have been travelling throughout Africa to capture children’s thoughts, opinions and ideas to present a new perspective on Africa through their own eyes.
In ‘Our Africa’, you can see children talk about what matters most to them – from games they play; to aspirations they have for jobs; to how they would like things changed fundamentally in their societies.
