Update 22nd September: Latest on SOS Children work in flood affected Pakistan

The latest report from the flooding in Pakistan and our flood relief programme are now available.  This information has been put together by Souriya Anwar, President (centre of picture) of SOS Children's Villages Pakistan:

The floodwaters have now crossed into the province of Sindh, wreaking havoc with everything in their path. Countless more villages have been inundated and thousands rendered homeless. Sadly, this tragedy will continue to unfold until the excess water reaches the sea, estimated to take several more days. As rightly expressed by Mr. Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, we are witnessing a "slow tsunami".

We are still focusing on distribution of food supplies and drugs, as the topmost priority is, obviously, to save lives. The reports of children dying from disease are most distressing and, unfortunately, health hazards are an inevitable fallout.

We have established linkages with three reliable Non Governmental Organisations in Sindh as the peak of the flood has now reached that province. These are:

• Aitemaad (www.aitemaad.pk) formed by highly respected citizens specifically for flood relief measures.

• SPO - Strengthening Pakistan Organization (www.spopk.org), a reliable organization working for community uplift since 1987 - in which Javed Jabbar, an SOS Board member, is actively involved.

• ‘Art of Living’ another group which has established camps where Dr. Fazila Zamindar, a member of our Karachi SOS Children's Village Committee, is personally volunteering.

Food supply in south Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also being facilitated by the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA). We are supplying food to Balochistan through Mrs. Roshan Bharucha, Chairperson SOS Children's Village Balochistan, who is personally overseeing the distribution.

We have been able to distribute a sizable amount of supplies, which are as follows:

This brings the total food distribution to date to 19,650 food packages (last update from 9 September: 12,650, representing over 2 million meals).
