Eight of the world’s 10 worst countries to be a mother are in Sub-Saharan Africa, a new study by a global children’s charity reveals.Save the Children’s annual Mothers Index, which ranks the world’s best and worst places to be a mother, put Afghanistan as the worst country, followed by Niger, Chad, Guinea-Bissau, Yemen, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Sudan, Eritrea and Equatorial Guinea. Norway, Australia, Iceland and Sweden come top.

Child workers risk health, safety and education on US farms

Hundreds of thousands of children are foregoing their childhoods and educations to work in dangerous conditions on US farms, a rights organisation said in a new report. Children as young as 12 often work 10 or more hours a day with sharp tools, heavy machinery, and dangerous pesticides, and die at 4 times the rate of children working in other jobs, according to the report. Farm worker children also drop out of school in alarming numbers.

Girls in Rwanda were rewarded for working hard at high school this week when the central African country’s first lady handed out bags of books, calculators, pens, watches and pocket money to help with their studies. The central African country has good attendance rates of about 94 per cent at primary school, with slightly more girls enrolled than boys. But by they time they get to secondary school age, less than 20 per cent of children – and even fewer girls – go on to enrol.
