Gaza Blog: Local bread
A few months ago, I got excited while I was walking through sections of the Palestinian heritage gallery that was set and sponsored by the SOS Children’s Village. I was happy because I got to meet may people who had come from different parts of the Gaza Strip. It was a great and happy occasion for me - I got to talk to the people and listen to their suggestions and opinions regarding the gallery and life in general.
While I was walking around the gallery, I saw many colorful paintings, traditional costumes and folklore dances which were all a welcome break from the severe siege that has been set upon the Gaza Strip. I was particularly interested in one section where they were making traditional local bread using the clay oven. This method is almost going to disappear because many people today depend on buying the bread from the bakery shops instead of making it at home. So, I stopped at that section to watch the process with amazement, and there I saw “Ilhaam” (30) - she is the leader of the bread making group, and she was really good at making it!
“Ilhaam” came to the SOS Children’s Village 5 years ago and after she had finished her required training and preparation she became an SOS mother to 7 children. She has some really good and delicious recipes that she has brought with her from the countryside where she lives, and the most important one that she is really good at is the Green wheat “Freekeh”, which is a meal that is made from roasted green wheat. It is rich in nutrition, proteins and vitamins, and her kids really love it! “Ilhaam” is a very skillful person and she is always busy with many things all day long - especially with her children! She cares for them and dresses them and gets them ready to participate in the SOS Children’s Village activities. On top of all these tasks that “Ilhaam” is doing, she also cares for her ill parents and spends a big portion of her paycheck on helping them live a good life.
