My name is Belinda. I am nine years old and I live in SOS Children's Village Asiakwa, Ghana.
I celebrated a wonderful Christmas with my mother, my sisters, my brothers, my aunties (SOS family helpers) and my friends. The Christmas holidays begun on 15 December 2006, and our mother took us out for shopping. Our mother was kind enough to buy all of us beautiful things. We received new clothes and new shoes. The boys also received watches, balls, hats, electronic games, while puppets and dolls were for the girls.
We visited Melcom and many nice places here in Asiakwa. Melcom is a big household shop in Ghana. It is a supermarket selling different items such as clothing, furniture, electrical, toys, food and beverages. The shop has been voted the best retail outlet of the year for four consecutive times from 2002 to 2005. We also went to Koforidua, about 62 km away from the village. Koforidua is the capital of the eastern region where the Asiakwa village is located.
Our mother also took us to see Father Christmas and we were enchanted by the millions of fireflies lighting up the dark roads forming rows of Christmas trees along the roads and the houses. There were too many lights and all the children wanted to touch Father Christmas. It was indeed a sight that I will never forget.
We had a lovely time at the village here with lots of food to eat and drink. My mother baked a huge cake for us and added lots of chocolate. I really enjoyed it. We had a good time in the village with bonfires and beautiful music. All the boys and girls were there and wore pretty clothes. On 26 December, we all had a big party. Everybody danced, even the village director. This made us laugh a lot to see the village director dancing. It was really a lovely Christmas."
SOS Children has been working in Ghana since 1971 and gives a loving family home to over 240 children at unique children's villages at Asiakwa and Tema. A further 5,200 children and their families are provided with practical support through community projects such as schools.
