From 28-30 September 2009, the first international family-based care conference will take place in Nairobi, Kenya. Organised by the African Network for the Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN) in cooperation with - amongst other organisations - SOS Children’s Villages, this conference will help actors working in the field of provision of family-based care to improve their skills. By enhancing the knowledge on family-based care for children through sharing of information and experiences, a better legislative and policy environment should be created in order to support family-based care for children in Africa.

Topics which will be focused on include the role of communities in family-based care, age and gender perspectives, policy and legislative frameworks, standards and the role of monitoring. Furthermore, special attention will be given to different forms of interventions, practices and experiences in family-based care as well as the shift from institutional care to family-based care.
