Child growing up at Arusha, Tanzania

In this interview, Josphat from the SOS Children's Village Arusha, Tanzania tells us about day to day life and what he hopes to be when he grows up.

SOS: How are you?

Josphat: Fine.

SOS: How old are you?

Josphat: Eleven years old.

SOS: Eleven, and you live at the SOS Children's Village.

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: And, what's your favourite subject?

Josphat: Science.

SOS: Science. Why science?

Josphat: Because I want to be a doctor?

SOS: Oh, do you? That's very nice. I hope you become a doctor. I hear you're also good at art.

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: Do you enjoy it?

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: What do you like to draw?

Josphat: Animals.

SOS: Animals - wild animals...

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: Like, what?

Josphat: Lions, antelopes, giraffes...and others.

SOS: Have you ever seen any of these?

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: Where?

Josphat: Tarangire.

SOS: Tarangire National Park

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: So, do you draw there when you go? Did you draw there?

Josphat: In Tarangire?

SOS: Yeah.

Josphat: No.

SOS: Oh, you draw them from memory -

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: And, hm, I went to the nursery school this morning, and I saw some of your 'doing' words. You had drawn 'doing' words, like 'skipping', 'learning' and dancing. Why did you do this?

Josphat: Because they asked me to draw them.

SOS: Did they?

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: So, it helps the nursery school children to see what a 'doing' word is?

Josphat: Yes.

SOS:Well, I thought they were very good.

Josphat: Thanks.

SOS: How long did it take you to do that?

Josphat: Two days.

SOS: Two days? Of your own time?

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: Well-done!

Josphat: Thanks.

SOS: So, what form are you in now, what class at school?

Josphat: Five.

SOS: Class five, so you have two more years of primary [school]?

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: And then you can go to secondary and start studying seriously to be a doctor....

Josphat: Yes.

SOS: ...and if you don't become a doctor you can maybe become...

Josphat: ....an artist...

SOS: ...an artist...ok, I wish you luck...

Josphat: I wish you, too.

SOS: Thank you.

Josphat: Thank you.
