Gaza Blog: Fatimah is not travelling!
When Fatimah, a young girl at the SOS Children's Village, Rafah, decided to get married to a person who lives outside Gaza Strip, she did not realize how much stress and hassle it would be to get out of the Gaza Strip. Fatimah who has lived in the Youth House at the SOS Children's Village for the past 3 years is getting ready to move into a new life; the life of a married woman - she is moving to Egypt which is not far from the Village - just 1 kilometer.
Fatimah arranged an engagement party to which many people like neighbors and friends attended; unfortunately her fiancé couldn't make it due to the border closures, he just saw the pictures of the party and the guests that she sent him by E-mail. Fatimah is not the only one who has experienced some challenges whilst trying to travel. As well as the hardship of life, the employees at the SOS Children's Village said that they can't get out of the Gaza Strip to visit their friends and family or receive any training.
In the past few days, there was an announcement about the opening of borders so the people could travel outside for just three days. Almost 5500 people registered to travel, got on buses from different parts of the Gaza Strip and by the time they got to the borders they waited for 17 hours and only few people made it out. Many went back in total disappointment, some lost their jobs and some lost their residency permits. Even if the borders open up again, will people be able to cross them?
