Volunteers for charity give hope to AIDS orphans in Tema, Ghana
Volunteers made a great contribution to the launching of the family strengthening programmes in Asiakwa and Tema. They have been nominated by the head of the village who is also a great supporter of the work done by the co-workers of the programme. Volunteers are in regular contact with the beneficiaries because they live with them. They serve as a bridge between SOS Children's Villages and the community.
Here some of them tell us about their commitment in the family strengthening programme's activities which help families care for their children in their own homes.
Jacob (32)
I am happy about being a volunteer since 2005. My motivation comes from the fact that we have more orphans in this area and there is nothing done to care about them. I have friendly contacts with the beneficiaries because we live together. I know them and they know me well. I am ready to help as a volunteer as long as possible.
Mariama (46)
I saw the need to assist orphans and vulnerable families so I am just motivated because I can contribute to alleviate the suffering of people, especially the children. I heard about SOS Children, but we have never been in contact before. I want to volunteer this programme as long as it will last, and I am happy in doing it.
Peter (27)
I am very pleased to be a member of the volunteers here. I have nothing to give to people who suffer, but if those from outside have things to give, I am eager to give my time, my energy and all that I have to help people to live a better life. I think that my contribution is well appreciated and I am ready to help as long as possible.
Michael (36)
I have heard about SOS Children before and I know that it is an organisation which takes care of orphans and abandoned children. I know that SOS Children is a serious organisation so I was ready to give my time and my energy to support all those orphans who are here. There is no problem combining it with my job. I know how to organise my days.
Miphtalu (42)
It is the first time that I work as a volunteer. I am happy doing it because there are more orphans here and nothing is done for them. So I am happy to contribute to their survival. The time I heard about the family strengthening programme, I knew I can volunteer and help. I see that the suffering of the children has come down through this regular assistance and I am ready to assist as long as possible.
SOS Children has been working in Ghana since 1971 and has two unique children's villages at Tema and Asiakwa caring for more than 240 orphan children. Projects in the community give practical support to a further 900 children affected by HIV/AIDS and their families.
You can support children in need in Ghana by sponsoring a child.
