Following the political assassinations in Guinea-Bissau, the situation in the country seems to have calmed. SOS staff have therefore decided to re-open the SOS programmes which they had closed as a safety precaution. The presidential elections are still planned to take place on 28 June and all SOS projects remain on high alert.

Three former ministers, one of them a serious candidate for the upcoming presidential elections, were assasinated in the run up to the elections. SOS schools, the Social Centre and administrative offices were closed whilst the three Children's Villages contiuned operating.

According to the State radio in Guinea-Bissau, Baciro Dabo, a government minister who was to be a candidate in Guinea-Bissau's presidential election, was killed by gunmen on Friday 5 June 2009. He was a close ally of Vieira and was seen as a candidate with a strong chance of winning the elections.
