Case studies: former SOS child Ennerdale, South Africa
Former SOS youth at SOS Children's Village Ennerdale, Pedro, shares his thoughts on life at the village, growing up, and becoming an adult.
SOS Children's Villages Taught Pedro to Be the Best He Can Be
Pedro came to the SOS Children's Village Ennerdale in 1983 when he was just six years old. He believes the village created an excellent base from which he grew. Today he is a successful analyst in the marketing and advertising industry.
"One of the nicest things I learned at SOS Children's Villages was the blessing of giving. During all my childhood at SOS Children's Villages I was on the receiving side. Many a day I took it for granted. But as I grew older I valued it more and more. Now that I am in a position to give, I enjoy it thoroughly. Not just by giving money but also spiritually, and by setting an example for all the other young ones who look up to me," said Pedro.
Pedro's father figure at the village was Eugene, he was the administrator at the time but Pedro says you could feel genuine love flowing from him. (Eugene Absolom is now the National Director for SOS Children's Villages South Africa). "My SOS moms were also lovely people and I still keep in touch with them," smiled Pedro.
Determination to reach his goals
A great challenge for Pedro was the day he was told he would have to go out in the world and start a job. "I was very upset and I felt deserted. Later, however, I realised the value of the huge step that I took then. It was through this process that I became aware of who I am."
Pedro now confidentialy believes in himself. "I can do what I set my mind to. I can achieve my dreams. There is no 'quick fix' for getting rich. If you are not prepared to really apply yourself to your job, then don't expect promotions and extra perks. It is through hard work, diligence and loyalty that I was able to successfully apply for my position as Senior Analyst."
One of Pedro's main goals in life is to make a difference in people's lives. "I want to help people grow and be the best they can be, whether it's in business or in the lives of my peers and siblings."
"I don't believe in comparing myself to other people, it makes one bitter or boastful. I also believe that today's children are too exposed to the idea of 'idolising' stars and people, even if their values and morals are rather dubious. My advice is: Just be yourself, and do the best you can. Probably the most valuable lesson that I was taught by SOS Children's Villages was to have high values and morals. I will remember that all my life."
SOS Children has been working in South Africa since the early 1980s and has unique children's villages at Ennerdale, Mamelodi, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg, Mthatha,
Nelspruit and Rustenburg.
