A fun and sporty day for SOS Nursery pupils from Bakoteh
Last month, children from the SOS Nursery in Bakoteh took part in their annual Sports Day. All of the 216 children gathered in the SOS Children's Village Bakoteh sports field to have fun and compete.
The children were split into four coloured 'houses' for the competition and their SOS mothers were there to cheer them on. To recognise the competitors, each athlete wore a ribbon from the colour of his or her house.
Races included the 'building block race' (where children would have to first assemble the blocks of their house colour before running towards the finishing line - a rope held up high by older children from the Village, about 20 meters away), the 'fancy dress race' (where the competitors had to run in their fancy dress) and the 'burst the balloon race'. For each race, one athlete from each house was selected to compete.
By the end of the day, all houses gathered for snacks and drinks. Competition was over and children started to mingle again to play. The result of the competition: 'Blue House' won this year!
Bakoteh is situated about 20 km from Gambia's capital, Banjul. The SOS Children's Village in Bakoteh consists of twelve family houses, where up to 120 children can find a new home. The Village also includes the SOS Nursery, built in 1982, which consists of four classrooms, a room for infant day care and a classroom for Montessori teaching.
