SOS Children began its work in Namibia in 1985 when the first SOS Children's Village was built on the outskirts of Windhoek on the banks of the Arebush River. The Village has ten family houses, a community house, a nursery school and two youth houses for the older children. A computer training workshop provides vocational training opportunities for 500 young people. SOS Children's second Village opened in Tsumeb in 1997. … more about our charity work in Namibia

Update for child sponsors from the SOS Children's Village Tsumeb, Namibia from December 2008.

Dear Friends

Report on SOS Children’s Village Facilities, Tsumeb

It’s our greatest pleasure to share with you the events and accomplishments of the past months.

No structural changes have been made to the SOS Children’s Village Tsumeb; it consists of 10 family homes, two youth homes, a SOS Children’s Village Director’s house, a workshop, nursery school, an administrative block, and an open shelter for activities. The year was round off with renovations done to the family houses.

Currently we have a total of 102 children including youth as well as a total of 31 staff members. Two children were re-integrated with their biological families. They have reached independency and were ready to be united with their families. However, the SOS Children’s Village is still involved in the lives of these children and supports them in furthering their skills. A follow-up workshop on Child Protection was held in October at the SOS Children’s Village for the SOS mothers and staff.

The youth were exposed to broader career options through visits to various business places in Windhoek, which is the capital city of Namibia. The SOS mothers enjoyed the mid-term holiday with their SOS children by visiting day- lodges and outings in town. They also paid as visit to the local museum in Tsumeb and the children found this very interesting.

Educating children for the future

One of our young and innovative youth girls bit farewell to school at the end of October after completing the grade twelve examinations. The grade ten examinations are also essential for the final phase of secondary school and one could sense the commitment learners made towards their exams and the support mothers offered.

The SOS Nursery School held their annual graduation function, for those children leaving the nursery school at the end of the year. Thirty eight of the school readiness children are accepted for grade 1 all over Namibia. It is an honor to be recognised as a good and structured nursery school.

Our Family Strengthening Programme was visited by the Regional Director and Regional Advisor to assist with challenges and introducing the new strategy initiatives. The nursery school children are showing-off with new aprons sewed by the needlework department. The bread baking project is operational and has the potential to grow into an independent income generating project. Business management training was presented to the needlework and bread baking groups enabling them to manage the projects accurately. The program registered 485 beneficiaries, and they are assisted with either scholarships, self-sufficiency programs and medical access.

The SOS children are all excited and look forward to spend the December holiday with their biological families. The year 2008 will be closed off with a prize-giving and Christmas party for the children in the SOS Children’s Village.

Once again our team wishes to thank you all for your support without none of this would have been possible.

We like to take the opportunity to wish all of you a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
