Sponsor's update from Lagos, Nigeria
Child sponsorship update from the SOS Children's Village Isolo (Lagos), Nigeria from Summer 2008
We heartily express our profound gratitude to you sponsors and friends of SOS for your kindness and friendship towards caring for our children.
One hundred and one children now live in our Village at Isolo. Their ages range from 7 months to 16 years. We have a total number of 74 youths 38 boys and 36 girls in our 3 youth homes. Six new children were admitted this year.
A musical competition was organised at the Village, for SOS children and youths on Easter Monday (31st March, 2008). This was organised by BP Vision Limited, an entertainment-consulting firm that seeks to redefine the role of entertainment in the society. They set up a project called Galaxians Play for Charity”, designed to deliberately adorn, sanitise and celebrate the Nigeria entertainment industry while paying special attention to charity (SOS Children’s Villages, Nigeria). Two of our youths emerged winners in the musical competition.
This is to discover and expose musically talented youngsters within SOS Children’s Village, Nigeria. The Galaxians also organised a football match to raise funds for the two talented youths from the SOS Children’s Villages in Nigeria in April 27th, 2008.
Four youths 2 boys and 2 girls who had graduated from the universities late last year, have proceeded to a compulsory National Youth Service in various parts of the country. Efforts will be made to assist them to secure employment immediately after their National Youth Service programme.
Providing guidance for independance
Youths with various challenges were guided and counseled individually, or as a group in order to overcome their challenges and difficulties which include medical, academic, emotional and personal. This is so especially for the ones who have just gained admission into tertiary institutions, as they would need to adjust into life in the higher institutions. Nine of our youths were offered admission into different higher institutions. Their courses of studies include Mass Communication, Banking/Finance, Accountancy, Business Administration and Geographical studies.
Three youths - 1 boy and 2 girls proceeded to 1 year industrial attachment training after their Ordinary National Diploma last year. It was a joyous day when one of our resettled youth boy’s wife gave birth to twins (a male and a female). Many SOS friends and families witnessed the children’s naming ceremony in the first quarter of the year.
We once again extend our sincere appreciation to you for your moral and financial support to all our lovely children at Isolo. We remain committed to the children entrusted in our care.
