The situation around the SOS Maizelands Farm, on which we reported last week, seems to be improving for SOS staff and their families.

Mr Aaron Mukwirimba, of the SOS Vocational Training Centre in Shamva, near Bindura, reported this morning that over the last four days, the cases of cholera treated at the cholera treatment centre had dwindled to just two or three cases a day. This has led the Provincial Medical Director to make a decision to close the cholera treatment centre.

On 19 January, a cholera treatment centre was established six kilometers east of the SOS Vocational Training Centre. Mr Mukwirimba was advised by the office of the Provincial Medical Director that a cholera outbreak cluster had developed there. Any cases of cholera reported on the SOS Maizelands Farm or surrounding farms will now be treated at the new treatment centre.

No loss of life was reported during the operation of the cholera treatment centre . “In fact, without it, I am sure I would have had to report deaths of SOS staff and some of our immediate neighbours”, commented Mr Mukwirimba.
