The winter edition of the SOS Children Newsletter, 'Family Matters' is now ready to download.

Family Strengthening in Eastern Europe

In this edition, we focus on how we are helping vulnerable families stay together in Eastern Europe. Following the demise of the Communist system, social reform in this region has been piecemeal and the welfare needs of millions of vulnerable children and families has been largely overlooked. This means that millions of children are at risk of losing the protection of their families. Through our Family Strengthening Programmes, we support parents so they are able to care properly for their children in the long-term. We provide assistance in the form of material, educational, health, legal and social support. Once these basic needs are met, we provide families with the additional skills and knowledge they need in order to become self-sufficient. We look at examples of SOS Children's work in this area in Ukraine, Poland and Bulgaria.

Child Sponsorship

Also featured in the Newsletter is a comprehensive guide to Child Sponsorship. Sponsoring a child can be an extremely effective way of ensuring a child can grow up within the love and security of a family. Here, you'll be able to read sponsor testimonials and find out what you can expect from sponsoring an SOS child.

SOS News

You can also read all the latest SOS News from around the world. Find out about how our new Children's Village in Chipata, Zambia is progressing; a new music therapy project in Uganda and what children from the SOS Children's Nursery in Blantyre, Malawi are growing in their vegetable patch!

A million together

By 2016, SOS Children has made a commitment to ensure that a million children will get to grow up in a family. Of these, one hundred thousand will be given a new family and home in an SOS Children's Village and nine hundred thousand will be able to grow up within their own (or extended) family with our support. You can read in Family Matters how we're making steps towards this goal.
