Storm relief programme begins in Haiti
SOS Emergency Appeal for those in Haiti affected by storms and hurricanes in Nov 2009
Haiti has been battered by four storms since mid-August including direct hits by tropical storm Fay and Hurricane Gustav. SOS Children has decided to implement an emergency relief programme to help, as flooding is widespread and many lack access to basic medical care and face starvation.
According to reports, 10.376 family homes have been destroyed, 77 people have died, 9 are reported missing, 35 are injured and there is considerable damage to infrastructure. Many school and health centre facilities have been seriously damaged and a large proportion of crops have been lost. The reopening of schools has been delayed and it is unknown when they will open again.
SOS Children has decided to commit 26,000USD to be used for immediate emergency relief actions. The programme is scheduled to run over the next two months and support 50 families in the affected areas of Cap Haitién and Santo. Help is to include aid packages every two weeks over a period of two months.
An update including current photos and the development of the programme will follow soon.
